Melissa (bee in greek) or lemon balm is a native plant in Greece that belongs to the mint family and has a characteristic lemon smell. It got its name from bees as it is an ideal food for them.
According to greek mythology, lemon balm was dedicated to the goddess Artemis. It was known for its relaxing action, while Dioskouridis says that they used it to relieve toothache and scorpion stings. During the Middle Ages, alchemists used it to make elixirs of youth and to relieve headaches.
In modern herbal medicine as a decoction it is known for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral action. Helps fight stress and relieve digestive disorders.
