Melomakarona are the small greek Christmas cookies. They are with the diples and the kourabiedes the traditional Christmas desserts !
Ingredients
- 2 cups olive oil
- 0.75 cup sugar
- 1 cup orange juice
- 2 tablespoons Metaxa cognac
- 8 cups sifted flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- walnuts
- cinnamon
For the syrup
- 2 cups honey
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 cups water
Utensils
- 1 hand or stand mixer
- 1 flour sieve
- 1 baking tray
Making
Sift together the flour, baking powder and baking soda in another container. Repeat the operation two more times so that the mixture is perfect.
Mix the 2 containers together and work them gently.
Take pieces of dough the size of an egg and make them into oval. Place them on an ungreased baking sheet and cook in a moderate oven for 30 min.
Boil the honey, sugar and water for 5 min. Pour this syrup on the melomakarona, let them soak for 15 min, take them out and place them on a large dish.
Sprinkle with chopped nuts and cinnamon.
The recipe is for about 40 melomakarona.
