Laconia (modern Greek: Λακωνία) is a region south-east of Peloponnese. It is a historic region, thanks to the history of Sparta, its capital.
It is a valley surrounded by the mountains Taygetus, Parnon and the Mediterranean Sea. Because of the mountains, access to Laconia is difficult. In antiquity, Homer calls the Lacedaemon region, but the name that ultimately remained is that of Laconia.
The word “laconic” comes precisely from this region and from the brief and concise way of speaking Spartans. They were very strict, loved the war and were very proud of their city. Diametrically opposed to the Athenian civilization, the Spartan civilization has finally declined.
In this part of Greece, there are many olive trees that offer excellent olive oil (especially of the variety Athinolia) and a very good honey.
